simple : epsom salts

Every so often I will do a write up on simple, basic, or raw items that have so many benefits. My first simple post was vinegar. We complicate things by having so many different ingredients in the things we use. It seems you need a separate product for everything! And all this stuff is taking up space and costing money! We don't really need alot of it.

I don't know about you, but it always makes me feel a little bit better knowing that there are ways to trim back and simplify things.

Thought I'd talk about epsom salts today...
This is a staple in our home. I use these almost every time I take a bath and frequently when my kids take their baths. There are many health benefits when you do this.

When you add a cup of epsom salts to a tub of water and soak in it for at least 15 minutes, it can help to greatly reduce stress and cause you to relax. Did you know that stress depletes your body of magnesium? When you take a bath with these salts, your skin easily absorbs magnesium sulfate which, in turn, raises the level of magnesium in your body. The magnesium helps to produce serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of calm and relaxation and also increases energy and stamina. On top of that, magnesium ions also relax and reduce irritability by lowering the affects of adrenaline. It lowers blood pressure, creates a relaxed feeling, improves sleep, concentration, and helps muscles and nerves to function properly. Amazing!! It also does wonders for your skin!

I won't elaborate on all the following because you can do your own google search and finds lots more info! But here are some other benefits of using epsom salts in a bath soak:

- Relieves pain, inflammation and muscle cramps - Exfoliates dead skin
- Helps muscles and nerves function properly
- Helps prevent hardening of arteries and blood clots - Makes insulin more effective

Important note: You should not take epsom salts internally unless your Doctor recommends it. This can have damaging effects on your body. In certain circumstances, epsom salts have been used to relieve constipation. It would pretty much have the same effect as a laxative. But again, only do this after you've asked your Doctor.

* Another thing I love to do is to add one part olive oil to 2 parts epsom salts. Mix this in a bowl and use as an invigorating body scrub in the shower. You can also add your favorite essential oil for fragrance. Do not use the salt scrub after shaving your legs though, the skin is much too sensitive at that point.

So, next time you take a bath, throw in a few handfuls of epsom salts. This simple ingredient can make you feel and look better!

I LOVE using epsom salts! I use them all the time too. Love this post, so informative! :) They also are great for using in place of sand or fake snow in decorating - and cheap. BTQ - You can get a giant jug of them at Costco for under $10.
